Old Fashioned Dark Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, blended thoroughly

Alternately add –

  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted cake flour sifted with 1/4 tsp salt and 3 tsp soda

Add in –

  • 3/4 cup cocoa, which has been stirred in –
  • 2/3 cup boiling water

Stir until dissolved. Mix well and add 1 tsp vanilla.

Pour into prepared pans and bake at 350°. Three 8″ layer pans,  35 – 40 minutes. 9 or 10″ tube pan, about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

This is fluffy and full flavored.

COCOA FROSTING:

Soft and Glossy

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Blend; then stir in – 4 cups sifted powdered sugar alternately with 4 – 6 Tbsp hot milk and beat smooth and creamy.
